When dressing up for Halloween, a costume party, cosplay, or any other event, one of the key aspects that pulls the look together is makeup. There are some considerations when selecting dress up makeup products.
How dramatic does the look need to be?
If your event is at night or in a dark venue, then you’ll need to have heavier application to be seen. Excessive light like spotlights and direct sunlight may also washout defining facial features, so contouring the cheeks and jaw and enhancing the shape of the eyes help.
What kind of coverage will you need?
Your look might may only require basic application with eyeshadow, lipstick, blush, mascara, etc. which can just be an enhanced version of a daily makeup routine. If you are needing full coverage on your face and maybe down your neck, then that will likely need. Your face will thank you for using products that are good for your skin and don’t clog pores.
Will you be applying multiple layers to create an illusion? (ex. a cut or additional eyes)
Using highly pigmented products that dry completely and offer full coverage with thin layers will save time and make the additional layer applications easier. Having a completely dry foundation layer will prevent mixing of the first layer with the additional layers.
How long does the look need to last?
If your look needs to last several hours, all day, or through wardrobe changes, then it’s best to use makeup that doesn’t smear once it sets. Budge-proof makeup will save you time by eliminating the need to touchup or reapply. Smudge-proof products will also save your costumes from makeup transfer.
What environment will you be in while wearing it? (ex. outside in the rain or excessive heat)
Waterproof or water-resistant products are a benefit if you will be outside in potential rain. Also think about the possibility you may sweat like in scorching heat, dancing, or just a big crowd in a small room. Having makeup that won’t melt or wash away is important to maintain your look’s integrity and time saver from having to reapply. No one wants to transform from an elf warrior princess to the blob from the swamp.
Bonus Tip
You can keep things simple by picking one or two features to GO BOLD. The eyes and lips are the easiest. You want a good Snow White, you need a bright red lip. A fairy usually has dramatic eye looks and a neutral lip.
